A refurbishment and extension of a Victorian Terrace House in Islington, London

This extension and refurbishment transforms a Victorian house, with new open-plan spaces and an improved relationship to the garden.

The works included the demolition of original rooms in the rear outrigger at both ground and half-landing level above, allowing a double height space to be created in the new kitchen (the original kitchen had an uncomfortably low ceiling height of 2.1m).

A bespoke polished stainless chandelier in the double height area adds drama, allowing reflected views of the room below and emphasising height. Polished stainless finishes are continued internally with a recessed display case and externally with cladding details.

A sculpted ceiling profile with radius plasterwork leads the eye toward the garden and enables a slim head detail above the 3.1m-tall doors. The garden is finished in polished concrete and limestone tiles, with a bespoke fence. The first floor, the family bathroom and a utility cellar were also refurbished.
