Extension and remodelling of 1960's asymmetric-roofed house to form modern family home

The clients bought the house with the aim of creating a modern family home in the appealing village of Marple Bridge, south of Manchester.

From the outset, they knew that a significant amount of remodelling and extension would be required for the house to become their ideal home.

The original house had been extended and a further conservatory had been added to the rear but without much consideration.

The project involves a large rear extension with asymmetric roof mimicking the main house with large glazed screen onto a living /dining space and a cedar-clad side element housing kitchen and utility areas.

A striking linear rooflight marks the line of old/new and drops much needed daylight into the heart of the plan.

Elsewhere in the original house, the ground floor is opened up and with space borrowed from the rear of the garage forms a flexible set of spaces for living, working and visiting guests, including down stairs shower room.

A lighter touch to the split-level upper storey, where more minor adjustment fine tuned spaces for three bedrooms and a family bathroom.

Windows are replaced throughout with joinery-made douglas fir frames and the exterior is finished in a balance of Cedral Weatherboarding by Marley Eternit, natural cedar and painted brick.

Internally new flooring included reclaimed squash court maple strips and polished concrete within the extension.

The project's success was how it managed to create a modern family home from an interesting but tired 1960's property through creative design and careful balancing of ambition and budget.
