The refurbishment and extension of a private home in the Tower Hamlets conservation area
Aware that many nearby planning applications had been rejected, a balanced approach to the development was carried out in order to achieve a two-storey rear extension along with a more typical single storey side-infill.
Externally the house is ‘dressed’ at the lower level to respond to individual tastes, with a garden-facing extension clad in inclined slate.
The internal layout responds to the client's individual needs with the ground floor stepping down from the existing living area at the front to a new open-plan kitchen and dining area at the back.
The larger space forms generous, light-filled rooms for the family to enjoy and is connected straight onto the garden.
Soap-washed douglas fir floorboards are matched with cupboard doors in the kitchen, while copper detailing and exposed ply edges reinforce the air of warm, natural materials that pervades the home.
