A small side infill extension to a house in North London
This in-situ concrete side-return extension, with it's board marked surface presents a bold expression of the structural changes to the house.
The rough surface of the concrete, contrasts with and seamlessly connects with the smoothness of the minimal glazing.
A planter that cantilevers out at the rear, accentuates the sculptural qualities of the concrete, and provides an opportunity to add a splash of colour and softness to the composition with planting.
Internally, a new opening has been created between the front and rear reception rooms. The dual aspect extends the sense of openness, while a sliding partition allows the rooms to be closed off for privacy. Continuing on the same level, the kitchen area is slightly raised above the dining area, with an island that cantilevers over the step.
Oak has been used in this instance to add warmth to the palette of cool blue greys and white, which flow through the space out onto the patio. The same palette of materials continues into the newly created utility space of the former cellar that has been cleverly structured so to avoid expensive unpinning and basement works.
