An extension to B-listed house in South Lanarkshire
The existing house - designed by architect Robert Thomson - was built in the late 19th to early 20th Century and was B-listed in 1980.
The clients had aspirations to enlarge the existing dwelling, in order to increase the accessibility and flexibility of the living space, whilst keeping with the style of the building as it stands.
The objective was to create a modern zinc clad extension to the north facing garden of the property, hidden from the Egypto-Greek style facade facing the street.
The ground floor was extended to the north to incorporate another living area/bedroom. To the east side of the new extension there is a ramp to increase ease of access into the house.
Internally, the floor level was made even throughout, and the wall between the hall and kitchen removed to increase the usability of the space. A subtle ramp was created internally between the sitting room and the new extension so that movement between rooms is fluid and unobstructed.
The extension style is modern, with slim projecting eaves. The architectural concept and the materials selected have been conceived with the intention to provide an addition that is of its own time, whilst also taking something of the concept behind the architecture of the existing house.
There are subtle nods towards the existing building, such as; the cladding (designed around a traditional masonry course height), the shadow gap (the thickness of a rusticated masonry joint) and a three light window facing the garden (mimicking the window facing the garden on the first floor).
