Residential
Because of it’s location in North Barnet, this 1980s house feels very much like the last property in north London before the countryside proper takes over. Raised up from the surrounding fields there was already a fantastically open aspect to the back of the house.
The house had already been opened up with the ground floor and making one space sub-divided by smaller divisions. This arrangement was to be maintained therefore only minor alterations were made to the existing interior. The new scheme extends as two wings – one extending the family living space, the other providing a separate living space for the children and utility space. The wings thus form the edges of an external patio area, that allows the kitchen to still have a strong relationship with outside. The patio is therefore accessed from all three sides, open to the main views while being protected from the elements and maintaining privacy.
White render is the predominant material however a unorthodox detail that could weather the top of the render without the use of metal flashing was developed that gives the walls a sculptural quality.
