Renovation of two bedroom flat in London
Situated along a terraced street, this project consists of a full renovation and reconfiguration of an upper floor flat.
Transformed from a neglected, poorly lit series of small rooms, the now spacious and bright open-plan interior is defined by two double height spaces.
Key works include: opening up the former loft above the living areas to create a new mezzanine bedroom with dramatic voids on either side; and a new large skylight over the kitchen void, flooding the space with daylight and framing the stunning view to the landscape.
The detail strategy involves exposing original architectural features, and re-interpreting them with contemporary elements: the brick walls, which are exposed in distinctive triangular areas recalling the former loft space, are echoed by white ceramic brick-shaped tiles in the new kitchen and bathroom; additionally, the exposed timber floorboards in the communal areas contrast with the white floor of the new staircase.
