Mixed tenure and mixed use development overlooking new publicly accessible park on the edge of City Road Basin canal
Built in 1820, City Road Basin was once one of the major commercial canal basins in London. It is bordered by Islington, Shoreditch and Finsbury, with the City only half a mile away. The largely derelict industrial buildings on the basin had made the waterway inaccessible to the public and local community.
In 2001 when a major site on the canal became vacant PTEa saw the opportunity to realise the potential of the Basin as a community asset, and approached British Waterways and Islington Council with the idea of opening up this part of the canal to the public for the first time by creating a linear park along the Basin, along with homes, businesses, retail, recreation and leisure, with an active waterspace and park.
This provided the catalyst for the development of a masterplan to open up both the land around the basin and the waterspace itself to the public.
In 2002 City Wharf Development Company, a joint partnership between PTEa and Groveworld was set up to purchase and develop part of the site. The project creates a publicly accessible waterside park overlooked by high quality tenure-blind affordable and private sale flats and commercial space at ground floor level.
