The Black Box

The unique form sits elegantly alongside the once thatched property, appearing both independent and connected to the host dwelling. At nearly £8,000 a square meter, this project provided value for money not by volume, but by addressing a number of key issues. The client’s brief was to create a unique architectural statement that addressed the leaking flat roof and establish first floor access to the garden that would not compromise the light within the utility space below. This is achieved, as the north facing design effortlessly flows light throughout the space and the introduction of a rooflight, solar tubes and an internal glass floor transmit light to the utility space below. The project was made so successful by the passion that was brought to the design from the client, contractor and architect. Thought has been given to every angle, detail and junction to ensure a high level of quality in every area. Co Create Architects worked closely with the local contractor on site throughout the construction period to ensure a high quality of workmanship. Hidden in the Teign Valley, Devon, this unique architectural installation embedded within the conservation area adjacent to surrounding listed buildings, takes its material influence from the local neighbouring agricultural outbuildings, with the use of charred larch, zinc roofing and black framed glazing. Sustainability was an essential consideration of the design. The entirety of the frame was constructed from timber, this was a conscious gesture to minimise the embodied carbon on the build. The charred larch cladding was locally sourced and was hand scorched on site, providing not only reduced emissions but a considered locality to the craft of “The Black Box".
