Pensaer London has completed this elegant extension in East Dulwich, using handcrafted materials and enhancing the gentle aesthetic of the original house.
Dating from 1864 and built of yellow stock bricks, the house has been owned by the same family for over twenty years. They wanted to create a communal kitchen and dining space that interacted with the garden. The palette of the extension’s stepped façade subtly references the original house. Formed of yellow Petersen bricks and punctuated by pale green steel-framed windows, it folds around the garden, bringing light into the centre of the kitchen and allowing a sense of space and connection with the outdoors. With a large skylight running its full length, the kitchen is at the centre of the space. The dining area projects into the garden, wrapped on two sides with expansive glazing, the scale of which is softened with smaller panes of glass and crafted detailing. In keeping with Pensaer’s focus on craft and bespoke detail, the design uses high-quality, hand-made materials which lend the space character and atmosphere. Together with the careful consideration of light and aspect, this has created a comforting, welcoming space. Terracotta floor tiles, both inside and out, reference the history of the house, and the addition of reclaimed Victorian floor tiles in the landscaping forms a further link to the original house. The winding path through the garden draws the eye out from the house, adding depth to a modest garden.
