A pretty Victorian semi-detached house with a southwest facing garden, but kitchen and loo in the tunnel back, presented an opportunity to realise both a reorganisation of the layout of the rear and a contemporary interpretation of the orangery.

The proposals involved the opening up of the tunnel back’s side wall and the creation of a dining space within a new and substantially fenestrated side extension which gives onto the garden. Featured with a baseline rhythm of arched windows, glazed doors and skylights, the conditioned space of the side extension offsets the amount of glazing by upping its performance to address thermal requirements. The high levels of natural light that result work with the volume of the pitched roofed side extension and the light colour palette selected to create an airy architecture given a little textural moment by the timber roof structure adopted, and enjoying axial views out into the rear garden. In counterpoint, the lower ceilinged space of the remodelled kitchen, located within the conjoined tunnel back, offers oversight of the dining space, and each of the two distinctive spaces created effects a quietly eventive backdrop to the other. Externally while the pitched roof of the extension reverberates with surrounding traditional forms, the pale sandstone surfacing of its walling sets it apart and, matched in with new surfacing to the rear terrace, completes a distinctive new interpretation of the idea of the Orangery.
