The transformation of a family home in east London.
Located within the heart of Hackney's Graham Road and Mapledene conservation area, the transformation of this family home aims to provide open-plan, efficient and quality space for a growing family.
While the materials used seek to both match and complement those native to the site, the overarching form has been designed to mirror the angles of the original rear addition while dramatically engaging the building with its 21st century occupancy.
Finished in London Old stock brickwork to the rear with standing seam zinc to the side and roof, this asymmetrical extension aims to bring a dramatic conclusion to your progression through the house, by providing both increased height and aspect at its junction to the garden and to the original property above.
Internally, a subtle column of matching brickwork grounds and denotes the former footprint of the property as it perforates through the roof plane to meet the historic elevation. The relationship to which is further accentuated with sections of steel exposed where new volumes have been formed and otherwise disappearing within the historic mass above as it floats across the plan.
