Extension to Grade II listed building providing a bespoke open-plan kitchen and additional entertaining space.
Baker’s Farmhouse is a Grade II Listed building dating back to the early 1400s. It sits on the edge of the Weald of Kent surrounded by countryside renowned for its natural beauty and ancient woodlands.
The concept was to create an extension to the property which read as a continuation of the solid existing façade from the front and side elevations, contrasted by a lightweight glazed façade opening up to the rear garden.
The extension provides a bespoke open-plan kitchen which allows an area of the existing house to return to its original state. A glass link between the old and new was carefully design to reinstate a doorway that previously existed and provides opportunity to view the rear façade during the transition. The expanse of sliding glazing offers the dining space seamless views into the garden which has been landscaped to incorporate concealed steps and discrete external lighting. Internally, the kitchen area incorporates recessed lights in the ceiling and walls and a feature strip light which delineates the kitchen island and dining areas. A feature glass box punctures the external brick wall to provide and internal bay seat and views onto an old well which is illuminated at night.
The choice of external materials was carefully considered to reflect the surrounding vernacular – the bricks have been matched to the existing whilst the fine profiled glazing provides a visual continuity with the leaded windows of the original house.
The minimalist details and simple palette of materials allow this addition to complement the existing architecture and provide an entertaining space throughout the year where the client, who are both avid gardeners, are able to connect with their surrounding landscape.
