Florence Street

Originally built as a flat backed house the lower levels of this house had accumulated a variety of lean to structures over the years blocking the relationship with the garden.

Conceived as a modern interpretation of the closet wing the three-storey tower structure accommodates the various bathroom and utility spaces formerly housed within the main formal rooms of the house. The brick structure bookends a two-storey conservatory-like structure providing space for a basement kitchen and an extension to the ground floor through room.

The sooty brick and mannered detail of the window arches and blind window are a playful interpretation of Victorian 'house back' construction. The contrasting douglas fir-framed two-storey conservatory structure forms a visual and physical link between the garden and the original house.

The formal ground floor living room retains its original shuttered window opening which frames view out. At lower ground floor level the sliding door disappears into the wall structure to allow the basement to be opened up to the garden.
