The project is for a new pool house, gym, and sauna.

The project was conceived during lockdown for the family to relax and keep fit whilst working, studying, and living at home. The project is located in the green belt and THE Surrey Hills AONB. The planning approach was to ensure that the new building was not ‘disproportionate’ in scale when compared to the existing structures and buildings on site. The building was deliberately dug into the hill side to ensure that there was no negative impact on the existing house and to ensure that the openness of the countryside was maintained. A planted green roof helps the building blend with the landscape. The building was conceived as a five-bay structure with floating roof anchored either side by more private spaces comprising the changing area, plant room and sauna. The timber structure floats over all five bays and projects to the outside of the building providing solar shading to the large three bay sliding doors. The central space houses a gym and yoga studio. The structure has been left exposed expressing the honesty of the construction. The building was designed as a timber frame as being more sustainable and for ease of construction. The entrance to the building is via a concealed pivot door on the corner of the building that allows easy access from the main house and to the pool and outside seating area. Natural materials are used throughout with timber cladding with lead copings referencing the arts and crafts style of the existing building.
