The Wriggly Tin is low energy family home situated near Glastonbury in Somerset, that embraces a local and sustainable way of living.
The project promotes the use of low carbon natural materials and celebrates views of Glastonbury Tor and surrounding countryside. The project is situated on the same plot as Fin’s childhood home, a pioneering eco house designed in 1997 by his late father Mark Orme, the founder of ORME architecture. Formerly a stable block, the new build intends to compliment the existing family home by implementing a similar pallet of tactile materials and sharing a clear sustainable agenda. The Wriggly Tin has been delivered as a design and self build with Fin working alongside consultant architects, ORME architecture, during concept and technical design and then acting as project manger and builder during construction, working alongside two local builders and fellow recent architecture graduates. The self build process has enabled a close interconnection between design and building, helping establish a carefully crafted bespoke building. The structure is built principally from one material; timber, using a twin-stud frame and structural glue-lam. The walls and roof are insulated with recycled warm-cell newspaper and the exterior of the building is primarily clad in local larch timber, grown within 30 miles of the site. PV panels and an Air Source heat Pump provide a localised self sufficient heat and electrical source. A double height open plan living space sits at the heart of the building, hosting a kitchen, dining area, and sitting room. Two bedrooms sit at either end of the living space, with a mezzanine studio above the spare bedroom. The double height master bedroom enjoys a large corner window and an outdoor bath that sits adjacent to the en-suit bathroom.
