Located on a quiet cul-de-sac just off Greenwich High Way and set within the West Greenwich Conservation Area, this former Victorian School Hall had previously been used as a meeting hall and office prior to becoming derelict
The client's preference for an industrial aesthetic combined with an overriding requirement for a functional, child-friendly scheme necessitated a considered design approach with a reduced palette of materials, carefully selected in response to the existing building and its context. Arranged over two floors, the property has been comprehensively refurbished and upgraded to provide a functional contemporary home suitable for a growing family.
At raised ground floor the new layout has been arranged to take advantage of the large lateral open floor plan and double-height floor to ceiling heights, with auxiliary spaces compactly organised at one end in order to maximise living space. An elevated mezzanine sundeck with a large retractable skylight provides an additional living area whilst creating a new connection between the internal and external spaces. At lower ground floor level all three bedrooms face onto a newly excavated private sunken courtyard. Having become derelict and dilapidated, the Hall had fallen into disrepair and was no longer suitable for occupation.
By refurbishing and upgrading the property we have been able to provide high-quality, functional residential accommodation suitable for modern living that maximises the potential of the building whilst maintaining the client’s needs at its core. This simple yet detailed project located within a prominent Conservation Area has ensured that an important local building is preserved and it’s lifespan extended.
