Refurbishment and extension of a private home in South London
The brief for this project was to create a new heart for this large Victorian property in South London through the renovation and extension of the ground floor spaces. The new kitchen is a simple monochrome space designed to provide a functional and flexible hub for this young couple. An elegant room for entertaining as well as eventually accommodating a young family.
The exterior envelope is seamless, enclosing the extension completely in a waterproof rubber skin. Every detail has been carefully considered: keeping the glazing flush and avoiding gutters in order to retain a clean and sharp aesthetic. The grey coating further reinforces this by blending into the London sky.
Internally, the palette of materials is minimal and carefully curated to present a modern, versatile aesthetic. A matt white kitchen with white stone worktops combines with exposed beams and columns lining the walls and roof in white washed Douglas Fir. Rooflights inserted between the timber beams create interesting plays of light and shadow on the neutral surfaces. A beautiful terrazzo floor is both practical and warm in contrast to the predominantly white interior.
