Rear extension and internal alterations to a Victorian terraced house
Single-storey rear extension to a Victorian terraced family home. The existing kitchen and traditional family room were separate, cramped and poorly lit.
The aim was to provide a larger, contemporary kitchen/dining area better connected to the existing family room and maximising natural light in the narrow, north-east facing garden.
To create a dynamic flow of space and a more direct relationship with the garden area, an extensive portion of the original external wall was removed.
By pulling out the new structure from the building footprint and utilising Bifold doors effectively, the wall of the extension folds back to provide a physical link to the garden, brings in natural light and blurs the edge between inside and outside space.
The use of modern materials and technology creates a tension between the old and new to provide an innovative and invigorating addition to the environment.
