Extension, refurbishment and remodelling of a ground floor apartment within a Victorian terrace in Hampstead
This remodelling and extension of a ground floor flat in Hampstead was designed for a young family.
Located in a conservation area, it gives the property a lively new identity and valuable additional space.
The extension makes excellent use of a difficult site. A former store has been reclaimed as a second bathroom, while an awkward area between the house and an electricity substation has also been brought within the extension as a third bedroom.
Two gently sloping roofs draw the eye towards the middle of the extension, which is clad in carefully detailed dark zinc and whose geometry mirrors the angularity of the site.
The original interiors have been completely refurbished, and period features have been sensitively restored. A remodelled kitchen sits beneath a faceted tall ceiling that picks up the angularity of the extension and enhances the spaciousness of the room.
