Refurbishment of two separate flats in a two story detached annex building to form a new single family dwelling
Originally two flats forming part of a detached annexed two-storey cottage, Glas combined both into a single dwelling for a senior couple in their eighties.
Downscaling from the large detached Victorian town house next-door, Glas were tasked with developing a sustainable contemporary solution to the clients needs.
Re-configuring the property into a single home involved addressing the clients’ requirement for suitable access, key views onto a mature fuchsia bush, and a ground-floor sunroom.
Remodelling the front of the cottage, resulted in a ‘back-to-front’ extension that is crisp, confident and adds a new warm focal point to the existing house, with its interplay of shifting and projecting volumes clad in Western Red Cedar timber rain-screen of varying strip widths.
Flush, frameless and wrap-around roof-lights provide improved levels of daylight; and a new external west-facing sundeck ensures some sunny outdoor space.
