Conversion and extension of two terraced cottages to form one dwelling within the Cotswold village of Broadwell, Gloucestershire, located within a Conservation Area and the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
To the front the challenge was to create a unified appearance without losing the character of the buildings within their terraced setting. This has been achieved by rationalising openings, replacing window and doors with traditional joinery and repointing in lime mortar.
To the rear elevation a new modern two-storey extension has been constructed to subtly contrast with the existing older building fabric.
It is constructed with drystone walling at ground floor with a dynamic glazed corner linking to a two storey oak boarded, flat roofed ‘box’ which has a small balcony at first floor with vertically louvred oak boards that provide solar shading and privacy from adjoining properties. The detailing is restrained and disciplined with expressed structural elements.
