Refurbishment of a duplex flat in Lubetkin's Grade I listed apartment block in Highgate, north London
This duplex apartment was in a poor state and in need of repair to protect it from damage caused by leaking windows and broken heating services.
The client wanted a sensible design for their Grade I listed apartment, as a family home as well as for them in their later years. They took a long-term approach. We were to ‘do what it takes’ to keep the last of the 1938 bathrooms and get the dramatic concertina windows working again. They wanted a large new kitchen and a study.
Understanding Highpoint’s structure and services, as well as wishing to protect original elements, required a meticulous approach. Archival documents were invaluable as well as access to a basement room full of salvage that the porter had kept over years. We discovered a flat had recently been fire-damaged and stripped-out, the builder’s waste produced a treasure of essential materials.
By piecing together information, materials and components, with the help of historians and skilled specialist sub-contractors, we created a careful restoration and a 21st century home.
