The building is situated as a detached art studio combined with separate study and wetroom located in rear Garden of a generous four storey town house
The brief was to provide an artist studio together with wet-room and study within the town garden of the main house residence.
The design was evolved to consider the town garden context and the form was to respond to the terraced topology of the garden. This created three spaces that are defined in an unorthodox manner to be sculpturally connected to the garden rather than a prescriptive orthogonal layout.
The material elements are restrained very clearly to brick, glass and steel. The Serrated Brick that wraps the volume including the roof defines the Study and wet-room. The Art studio is defined by a triangular oxidized steel roof over an arrangement of glass triangles (including a tiny art gallery) that opens to the mid terrace garden and bedded into the raised rear terrace garden. The artist can feel sheltered in the ground but creative to the sky.
The 3 materials used are identified in a sculptural way to express the context of the conservation area.
I see bricks and triangles in Cowes.
