Refurbishment of dilapidated early 1800s brick and cast concrete roof hop kilns incorporating a museum and gallery space
The project was to refurbish and convert two dilapidated hop kilns into a small agricultural museum and gallery space to support local artist installations.
The design solution was to take the existing two identical vertical volumes which are narrow, long and tall spaces and create a unified museum and gallery space. The museum space has the intervention of a steel and oak mezzanine level which creates an intimate space on the ground with a view over into the gallery space.
A new entrance and circulation cube was added to the rear of the gable elevations formed in cor-ten angle iron hung off a steel frame.
The materials, including cor-ten, rough-cast concrete, oak sleepers and two way mirrors are used to enforce the agricultural heritage.
