Lannan Bakery
A new bakery and shop in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. Design led by Darcie Maher with support from Nicholas Taggart and Ossian Architects.
Lannan Bakery, located on the ground floor of a listed tenement at Hamilton Place and Saxe Coburg Street, features a distinctive corner entrance with natural light and views on three sides. Converted from a former beauty salon, the design includes a new front of house and an open commercial kitchen, creating an engaging experience for customers. The interior is lined with decorated timber panelling and a simple palette of durable materials like clay quarry tiles, iroko timber, and brass metalwork. Period features of the Category B listed building were preserved, with structural work limited to strengthening the floor for new kitchen equipment and updating wiring, lighting, plumbing, and security systems. Externally, the bakery has a refreshed identity with a simple color palette, gold gilt lettering, a projecting sign, and awnings that provide shade and shelter. Bespoke elements, including signage, textiles, and cabinetry, were custom-made by individual artisans, reinforcing the bakery’s crafted aesthetic.
