Makers’ Workshop, River Test, Hampshire
Set within the historic working landscape of the River Test, this new artist's studio and workshop creates purpose-built creative spaces for a picture framer and theatrical designer.
The lean, utilitarian building reflects the site's industrial and agricultural heritage while achieving refined architectural goals through thoughtful materials and detailing. Two naturally lit mono-pitched workspaces are divided by a central spine with ancillary spaces running alongside. Wide doors allow direct access, and a secondary entrance facilitates deliveries. A veranda of reclaimed Jarrah sleepers provides sheltered outdoor workspace. Key design elements enhance the space: a north clerestory brings steady natural light and views of mature trees, while a round oculus in the south elevation adds abstraction while maintaining a visual link to the clients’ home. These details transform a functional workshop into an inspiring creative space. The material palette balances sustainability and aesthetics. Local sycamore boarding, chosen for its low carbon footprint, will age naturally into the landscape. Industrial elements like corrugated roofing are detailed for elegance, while screeded floors and exposed timber ensure durability. Full-height plywood linings offer flexible storage and display, and heating comes from a water-source heat pump. The result is a sophisticated yet understated studio that blends seamlessly into its setting, proving architectural ambition can be realized through smart material choices and careful detailing rather than complexity or cost.
