A modernist extension to a family home in the City of Bath
Badgers Lea is a celebration of form and material; simple architectural moves bring the various elements together into a legible whole, while the considered use of material distinguishes the new from the existing. Externally, a singular horizontal plane hugs the existing building and captures the garage, forming an external canopy above a brickwork walkway. The choice of a light-grey brick speaks to the existing stone, but with contemporary detailing and a subtle use of stack-bonding. The brickwork continues inside, drawing the external character into the building and providing a robust plinth for the refined timber joinery and furniture. This integrated timber detailing, with stained plywood finishes, is used throughout the home, bringing a warmth and consistency to the atmospheric quality while working as spatial devices to provide functional places to rest, pause and live. Clearstory windows and a central rooflight bring daylight into the extension, creating a sense of openness, perfect for a family snug or office. When brought together, the playful interaction between these different elements – light, material and space – result in an elegant, harmonious architectural solution to a complex brief that enhances the every-day life of its inhabitants. Overall the house has seen significant energy performance upgrades through the implication of an air source heat pump, MVHR, and increased robust insulation upgrades to walls, roof, and floors. Upgrades to the existing house and high standards of the extension bring together a holistic whole-house approach to the retrofit of the dwelling.
