The house, built in the 1950's is located in the Wimbledon North Conservation Area, over-looking Wimbledon Park and very much a 'poor relation' in terms of its size and presence on a road of statement residences.
The frontage of the house had long been an annoyance to the owners in terms of it's appearance. The was also the added impracticality of the front entrance steps; elderly family members found it difficult to negotiate the steep flight into, or out of, the house. The design consolidates the various elements into a more cohesive organic composition.
The two garages were knocked into a single space with one garage door and a new roof wrapped up and over them, and the new entrance, to increase the scale and presence of the building on the streetscape. The treacherous stairs were removed and a new replaced with two gentler flights between generous half and full landing areas.
The layout of the new access staircase maximises the driveway area, a priority for the owners. New elements of the building are detailed simply in materials which either contrast and complement the existing house and the surroundings. The limestone cladding provides brightness to the north-west facing entrance facade, in contrast to the original dark brick of the house and its various original extensions.
The dark olive green metal roof edge facia compliments the green of the garden and trees of the park opposite. The bronze coloured pergola and doors tone with the original brickwork of the house. The pergola provides support to an existing climbing wisteria plant which was originally on a trellis on the face of the house. The windows of the existing house, woodwork facias and soffits were painted in a matching dark olive green to tie in with the up-and-over roof of the new extension.
The olive tree and the sculpture in the glass-box window were finishing touches provided by the owners who are now very proud of their 'new house'. The result is a building with a presence more befitting of its location in a Conservation Area and sits more comfortably within the streetscape. Locals have been heard to refer to 'the house with the sculpture' and stop and speak to the owners as they pass, something that may not have happened in the past.
