We stripped back this two bedroom flat, in a Hackney tower block to expose the concrete structure to add a raw materiality to the flat – a move which was very low in cost and reduced the new material requirement.

The clerestory windows allow light to penetrate deep into the plan whilst allowing the structure to be expressed throughout with a clear nod to the glass panels above the original doors.

An Oak box sits in the centre of the flat, housing the bathroom and utility appliances. The kitchen combines Ikea cabinets with bespoke oak and glass frontages with the worktop stepping down to become a bench/storage.

We were able to thermally upgrade the flat by internally insulating the walls below the windows, the weakest point in the flat. Overall, the refurbishment of the flat is an example of how dated post war flats can be renovated and refurbished to a high design standard.

Annual CO2 emissions data (requested in kg/m2/year) was not provided.
