The existing building is an end of terrace three storey house with dutch style slate cladding
The new single storey building added to the side, forms part of the ground floor spatial rearrangement which creates more open living space. It presents the opportunity of disrupting the typical narrow spatial form associated with the eponymous small terraced house.
Barely visible from the front, like a secret garden shed, the projecting building attached to the house shapes the external space, forming a hidden courtyard on the side which further disrupts the terraced house, strip plot morphology. The new addition is an inscrutable caped form, its envelope cloaked in dark grey artificial slates, of a larger format than those on the host building. It creates a collage assemblage of grey slate clad pitched forms.
The assymetrically pitched timber framed building creating a high internal volume, makes a distinct skewed barn like space, slicing into the skinny footplate to expand the living area as much in height as in plan. The room is modelled by changing light from its dual orientation. A rooflight and narrow window on the boundary side frame a neighbouring magnolia tree.
