This project involved the complete refurbishment and remodelling of an architect designed 1960s mono-pitch house to form a modern 4 bedroom dwelling on five split-floor levels that responds to the sloping site

It would be fair to state that the original house, whilst fashionable in the 60s, was dated and in need of modernisation. The exterior materials were uninteresting, the building performs badly in terms of energy conservation and the interior is so dated, it could be used in a period sitcom.

The project aims to be an example of why suburban 1960s housing can be efficiently modernised, avoiding the need for wholesale demolition and rebuilding. The roof was removed, a new third floor level added and former garage area rebuild, whilst maintaining the original multi-level ground slab. Liner brickwork was used to remodel the ground floor with deep reveals and large window openings throughout the building. Bespoke joinery formed the two level kitchen and the remaining ground floor was opened up to form one large living area. The new house does not extend beyond the building’s original footprint, maintaining the building line of the street and garden size.

The end result is a modern house, set within a typical inter-war suburban housing area, as uniques as the existing 1960s house. By maintaining the original stepped slab construction, party walls and internal structure, this development was delivered in 5 months at a cost of £120,000.
