Client: Tattoo Artist / Fine artist painter/ mid 30’s
Scope of the work / brief: renovate an old bungalow into a modern 3 bed house terrace and new Fine Art studio.
Concept: We removed a garage and conservatory which were poorly built later extensions to the original bungalow. This gave us the L shaped space where we could wrap the new studio around the house. The project was built with Permitted Development by building on these older extensions. The programme brief of 2 functions live and work allowed us to collage two typologies: the bungalow and the industrial workshop shed. From the front the shed is shy featureless with a hidden door painted a deep red. Inside the space excites with its expansive north facing glass roof windows and 3.5m rear garden window.
Three saw tooth triangles lift the height up to the sky. The northern light is a steady light suitable for studio space. In the bungalow we raised the roof following existing roof pitches to enable us to add two upstairs bedrooms. The ground floor was reconfigured from the original maze of small rooms for a spacious and open living space. We also designed furniture such as the kitchen and other tables from cnc cut birch. As we rebuilt the house, we were able to upgrade the insulation. We filled old crawl space with 12” of foam and poured a new radiant heated concrete slab as finish floor.
Most of the PVC windows were replaced with Danish Velfac windows and french doors and the roof was fully insulated. There is vast opportunity to move toward lower UK carbon goals through innovative retrofitting of vast areas of east London bungalows.
