A residential addition to a semi-detached Victorian villa in York’s Clifton conservation area
Our client’s home, like many of its period, had a convoluted sequence of spaces between the entrance, hallway, kitchen and garden, and did not relate well to its triangular garden at the rear. They asked us to improve and adapt the space for the needs of family life. Through dialogue, we created a tapered ground floor extension which mediates between the house and garden, and turns to respond to the garden and best solar orientation. Tapering both in plan and section, the extension steps between home and garden and reacts to the folding roof planes of the original house.
The extension was conceived as a solid brick mass, with openings placed to make a sequence of views to the garden and an existing magnolia tree as you move from the original house into the new extension. Made from slim profile handmade Danish bricks with a height equivalent to half a York brick, the extension is lightened by a linear cut delivering light deep into the plan, and a pronounced gap marking the transition between the extension and the main house.
Within the extension, two large bay windows pop outward and create places to sit on the inside, with tilt and turn and corner sliding windows which allow the space to be opened up for light, ventilation, views and movement into the garden. The interior is finished in oak with joinery designed in response to our client’s love of all things mid-century modern.
