Mezzanine installation to create additional living space, new kitchen and bar within a converted engine room of London Hydraulic Power Company’s Renforth Pump Station
The Grade II-listed Pump House neighbours Brunel’s Thames Tunnel. The project aimed to celebrate the industrial typology whilst improving living space within a double height volume that once housed steam engines.
The new mezzanine references the rooftop settling tanks which were originally constructed in cast metal panels.
Cast iron has been used to create a slim structure while addressing conservation interests for sensitive intervention and materiality.
The pattern makes reference to more decorative Victorian metalwork but has developed an economy of material and form. Both solid floor and filigree balustrade plates are cast from one pattern mould. The finely crafted balustrade plays light across the main volume whilst defining the kitchen space and enclosing an intimate upper deck retreat.
