The Screening Room is the last of a sequence of projects that have reworked spaces for the adult education college to improve access, showcase the college’s work and cater for more events.

City Lit’s building on Keeley Street was designed for the adult education college by Allies and Morrison and completed in 1995.

The Screening Room project follows the refurbishment of the former sports hall that created a 100-seat studio theatre and theatre foyer; and the relocation of the reception and admin offices to provide a new entrance, changing places provision, reception and gallery. Fabric Space was the architect for all three schemes.

The Screening Room results from a refit of the college’s original Recital Room where dated AV and thermal controls had limited the room’s full use for some time. Refurbishment provided an opportunity to respond to the need for a high-quality lecture space for 40-plus students to cater for high demand courses.

Specifically, a high-quality AV set up would benefit film studies and improve the potential to host public lectures and events. The fit-out included the introduction of retractable raked seating for 46; new acoustic flooring, acoustic linings which conceal automated blackout panels and a full upgrade of heating, ventilation, lighting and AV installations.

Flexibility was a key requirement for the developing programme and bespoke designs for a mobile and screen wall and adjustable lectern were developed with college staff and specialist contractors. The space can be readily reconfigured from lecture set up and panel discussions; moving the lectern and screen creates a stage area for small performances; and retracted seats leaves a clear space for rehearsals, filming and exhibitions to serve a broad programme of curriculum and event use to complement the theatre and gallery spaces.
