Private new build residential home for an architect on the Isle of Wight

2 Marsh Road is a holiday house on the north shore of the Isle of Wight at a point where the River Luck meets the sea. Planning permission was only granted as a replacement for the existing converted 1940s railway carriage which was recycled…again.

The house is 120m² and, to allow for potential flooding, is raised approximately 2.2m above ground level. The piling and ground beams support a series of ‘W’ galvanised steel frames on top of which a ply and frame timber construction 3 bedroom house is arranged on a strict 3-dimensional 1200x1200x1200 grid. Two parallel pitch roof gable end ‘sheds’ contain the living areas and bedroom/bathrooms respectively whilst a watch tower houses utility and study.

Internally floors, walls and ceilings are fire treated birch face ply whilst external finishes are stained pine cladding and corrugated iron.

Superstructure build time was four months.
