Refurbishment, restoration and enlargement of a dilapidated Grade II listed Victorian railway hotel
The hotel has been refurbished, with one hundred and sixty additional bedrooms and a relocated main entrance. A naturally lit atrium is the heart of the project, from which arteries have been drawn out to all of the other principal spaces, providing order to the interior.
To turn an awkward and confusing building into a workable hotel while respecting the best interiors has involved complex structural works. Extensive demolition at the heart of the building, new build construction in both steel and reinforced concrete, and the insertion of openings in the delicate historic fabric to fulfill modern servicing requirements.
