A self-build flexible community space designed and built in collaboration with Kielder Village and providing space to support stargazing events and overnight star camps.
The Warm Room is a permanent design-build project developed by seven Architecture (MArch) students from Newcastle University.
Located in the village of Kielder, the shelter is one of a series of projects being developed with Kielder Art and Architecture as part of the ongoing ‘Testing Ground’ programme.
These projects seek to explore social sustainability, by working directly with communities in participatory ways, and by engaging architecture students in co-design and co-construction activities, whilst also adding a direct social and economic benefit to local communities.
The structure provides an internal insulated space with laptop docking and equipment charging points as well as an external covered space for the use of stargazers who participate in overnight star camps. It also provides a venue for community meetings, educational events and seminars.
The timber framed structure was part prefabricated in the University before being transported to site and is clad in Siberian larch and lined with birch plywood. 3 metre tall windows allow wonderful views of the Kielder landscape and sky.
