Upper Park Road

An existing outdated extension and conservatory were demolished and the house structurally opened-up to create a large open plan space.

New structural steels are cantilevered to create a floating corner, opening the living space to the garden. An exposed cast concrete internal fin wall defines the edges of the new kitchen and dining areas, and provides the counter balance for the structural solution.

Reclaimed bricks offset the contemporary lines of the spaces with a warmth and texture that is carried in to the interior of the building, and expresses the materiality of the house as both structure and decoration.

Natural light is brought in to space through carefully positioned glass roof lights, and 3m high sliding glass doors, which can be fully opened under the floating corner creating a flow of the space in to the garden.

A head height of over 3.6m is achieved internally below the glazed roof light, while externally the design responds to planning considerations and steps down to the neighbouring boundary. A bespoke aluminium coping follows the change in height and forms the edge to the grass roof that links the extension with the garden, and the views of Richmond Park beyond, when seen from the bedrooms above.
