Transformation of an architect's Victorian house in Battersea, South London
This architect’s dwelling is one of a number of two-storey Victorian houses with identical street frontages that make up the Shaftesbury Estate in Battersea, South London.
The spatial interventions that are part of the comprehensive renovation provide a clear model for the transformation of these dwellings, integrating the requirements of the modern home and retaining the qualities of the original.
Birch plywood panels characterise the interior arranged over two floors, using storage and utility areas to define the new arrangement.
Carefully placed skylights and movable walls introduce daylight internally to create luminous, flexible spaces.
An additional guest bedroom is formed from the study on the upper landing through the introduction of a folding wall.
The fluid nature of the ground floor living areas extends to the rear garden through glazed doors that provide an outdoor room that is a natural extension of the kitchen.
