Extension and refurbishment to a suburban bungalow
The existing house had mean windows and low ceilings, but a beautiful mature garden.
Three interconnected, pitched volumes, face in three directions - east, west and south, capturing sunlight at different times of the day appropriate to function - the kitchen faces east for a light-bathed breakfast and the living room with open fireplace west to catch the last of the sunlight. They each pitch up to a large double-height window, capturing views of the garden and trees. There is a sense of drama as you step down into the extension and the ceiling rises up. The ceiling profile defines the three areas - kitchen, dining and living - but is open and at low level to allow a flexible and relaxed space to live.
The building is clad in black stained larch, so it appears recessive in the context of the garden and possesses an abstract geometry quality at night.
