A bold loft extension with a ‘hotel room’ feel that maximises the opportunities of permitted development
The brief was to carry out a loft extension to create a master bedroom suite that felt ‘like a hotel bedroom’.
Local planning policy supported only modest roof extensions and so the current permitted development rights were exploited. The resulting volume was large enough to contain a large bedroom, bathroom and dressing area.
Maximising the daylight in the room and the views out were important. Full-height glazing was designed to fully retract into a pocket into the cladding. Combined with a frameless external balustrade this creates a small Juliette balcony and creates a feeling of spaciousness.
Other problems with modern hotel rooms were also avoided. The bathroom door facing the bed was concealed behind a secret door in the lacquered wall and a desire to feel as though the shower was outside was achieved with a very large roof window that maximises daylight but maintains privacy.
