Oak framed garden room extension to existing detached dwelling
The proposals are to be carried out in two stages and include the formation of a new two-storey extension to accommodate a large entrance hall with bedroom suite over, and single storey extensions to form a study and garden room.
Phase 1 of the work, completed in November 2010, consisted of the construction of the new garden room to the east gable. The extension enjoys panoramic views of the landscape beyond in addition to focussing morning daylight deep into the building plan via the full height gable glazing.
The architectural language of the garden room is simple and well proportioned, with structural elements being expressed in their function, and the detailing disciplined using a pallet of traditional materials.
Large sliding door screens and frameless glazing housed between the oak structural elements serve to seamlessly link inside and outside spaces.
The second phase of the work will be the construction of a two-storey gabled extension which will form the main entrance into the house, since the vehicular drive enters the property at the rear. The extension is modelled around the curved chimney stack to the gable end, which serves the inglenook fireplace to the entrance hall. The stack is expressed as a sculpted ‘bookend’ and is formed in ashlar stone. The computer model shows both phases of the proposals.
