Mixed-use civic and arts hub containing a library, theatre, registry office and council chamber
Built as part of the plan to regenerate Corby's civic quarter and town square the architect won the international competition to design two buildings with a scheme that places civic and cultural functions in the same building.
The scheme wraps the town hall functions and public library in a spiralling 80 metre-long ramp around the theatre. This strategy maximises the footfall in the new building encouraging the integration of the different council offices, public services an the busy commercial space around the theatre and restaurants.
The horseshoe balcony arrangement of the 450 seat theatre is designed to bring the audience as close to the performance as possible. The flexible venue uses curved retractable seating, a seating elevator and wagon and a movable proscenium combine to create a traditional looking theatre.
