Academic building comprising of rehearsal studios, art and design studios, film suites, a postgraduate centre, academic offices, administrative facilities and services
The school consolidates the three different departments of the School of Arts – drama, film and visual arts – under one roof.
The three-storey building is wrapped in a continuous tiled zinc cladding and punctured regularly with recessed openings, responding to the blockwork module prevalent in other buildings on the campus.
On the front of the building, which faces onto a square intended to be an arrival point on the campus, a band of tall vertical glazing panes on the bottom two thirds of the façade provides views into the school.
Internally the building, which is square on plan, is arranged around a naturally lit atrium containing a steel staircase and galleries that closely hug the upper end walls. On the ground floor double height, box-like rooms individually cater for the separate environment approach to each of the departments. On the top floor, which contains a roof terrace, academic offices are arranged around the perimeter of the building.
Natural ventilation is used as much as possible, chimneys, inserted over double-height spaces, harness the natural airflow, while north facing roof lights passively control heat gains.
