The completed north elevation with a screen of Douglas fir doors, glass blocks and glass screens
Alan Forbes Download Original
The conversion of this derelict stable block on the southern extremity of Edinburgh's Western General Hospital into a cancer care centre
The design aimed to create firstly an atmosphere of domesticity and secondly, to create as much accommodation as possible within a limited volume. The original roof beams were removed to allow the building to extend into the roof space with two mezzanine floors.
The centre is capable of being combined into a series of progressively larger spaces or divided into individual rooms, through the use of a variety of sliding panels.
Externally the building retains the look of a stable, a new inner language of steel, lead, glass, glass blocks and timber exists behind the stone.
