Wellstudio Architecture transformed a cold, dim Edwardian house in Forest Hill into a bright, spacious sanctuary, creating a warm, modern home for a growing family.
Completed on a modest budget, the project combines architectural innovation with a strong focus on wellbeing, creating a home that functions beautifully and enhances the lives of its owners. The disjointed layout posed challenges for a young family. Wellstudio’s design, inspired by the Arts & Crafts style, introduces a rear extension with inverted arched windows of varying sizes and a seamless glazed rooflight which flood the space with natural light. The renovation has had a profound impact on the daily life of the owners, providing a refuge for relaxation, family bonding with their young daughter, and entertaining. The reimagined layout balances openness with privacy, making the home both functional and joyful. This project demonstrates how even small-scale renovations, when designed with care, can have a transformative effect on a family’s life and wellbeing. It is a testament to the power of thoughtful, wellbeing-driven architecture in creating spaces that elevate everyday living. For example, the upside down semi-lunar rooflight in the kitchen dramatically frames the sky above, while also pulling in the lush green garden views from outside. The view from the living room into the kitchen highlights the connected family spaces, framed by arched openings as a consistent language throughout the home. The rear elevation design pays homage to renowned local builder, Ted Christmas, who built the home in 1901, which is now recognised as the Perry Vale and Christmas Estate Conservation Area. His houses are regarded for their high-quality craftsmanship and decorative external joinery. Forming a contemporary take on traditional elements and materials, a neutral palette of whites, browns and metallic bronze glazing complement the original house while adding modern comfort.
