Dalling Road introduces discrete alterations and a quiet extension to transform a Victorian mid-terrace home into a coherent backdrop for a young growing family.
An ageing conservatory was replaced with a new rear and side extension that appears deceptively simple, inside and out. Externally, the asymmetric pitched roof subtly complements the conservation area, with light textured brick contrasting the London stock vernacular. The rear elevation, designed around whole brick modules, features a concealed lintel and brick soffit detail formed on-site to reduce costs. Internally, exposed timber rafters create rhythm, screening the kitchen while casting dynamic shadows. Large glazed openings frame greenery and flood the north-facing space with natural light. The kitchen, a collaboration between client, architect, and maker, centres around an open-frame island, with recessed tall units maintaining openness. A step and floor finishes subtly distinguish kitchen and dining areas. A new lobby optimises the narrow entrance hall, with sliding partitions allowing lower-level entertaining without disturbing upstairs bedrooms. Small yet impactful interventions in the main house restore original proportions, creating a balanced, functional family home with a place for everything and everyone.
