fortyfour
fortyfour is a compact Victorian home that has been creatively adapted and extended, providing a charming contemporary home for the architect’s own growing family.
The house enhances the characterful existing building with a modern interior that reflects its street presence. The façade, flank walls, slab, and joists were retained, with a first-floor rear extension over a small terrace. Externally, changes are minimal, with new windows, extended walls, and a repainted façade in a lighter blue resembling Wedgewood Jasperware. The ground floor is a textured box, contrasting with three precise joinery pieces containing a window, the stair and kitchen, or terrace doors that fold away for semi-outdoor dining. Upstairs, bedrooms and a bathroom feature skylights for light and ventilation. Cork flooring limits sound, and lime render provides a textured finish. Reclaimed bricks were lime-mortared, cement was minimised, and insulation includes cork and double-glazed windows. A gas-free electric boiler was installed, and vapour-permeable lime-plastered surfaces replace plasterboard. The project shows how historic buildings can be adapted sustainably while remaining personal and moving.
